We started out this amazing trip with flying standby, but in first class!! It was incredible!! So nice since we were flying the red eye out of Dulles into Frankfurt. After eating some great food, I laid back in my comfortable bed, put my earplugs and eye mask on and slept for 6-7 hours!!! We felt totally out of place but it was so much fun and helped with the time change/jet lag!

We met up with Jamie and got our rental car. Had to take a picture for Mom of the license plate which stood for 'Leisa Heward' :)

Our first stop was in Cologne/Koln Germany. It was a few hours outside of Frankfurt. We stopped at the famous cathedral there and it was unreal!! Such a massive building with such intricate details. There was some amazing stained glass and mosaic work inside and the pictures speak for themselves of the outside. It was so big we couldn't get a full view of it in the pictures.
So the history is that this cathedral was hit 14 or so times out of 250 bomb raids on Cologne in WWII. The bombers could see the cathedral from the air and so they knew they were over the city. They actually tried not to hit it so that they could continue to know where they were. Anyways, that is why the cathedral is blackened and the repaired parts are white (right side of building in picture).
If I remember correctly, they wanted to build underground parking for the Cathedral and as they dug down they found that the Cathedral had been built upon Roman ruins dating back to the 1st century. You can now go underground and see some of them. That is OLD and is so cool to actually see!

Love your LH license plate!!! :) We heard the same story about trying not to bomb the cathedrals in Rostock, Germany. the town was destroyed around the cathedral that still is standing there.
